LIGHT AS AN ELEMENT OF DIRECTION

The workshop wants to provide a primary preparation on the use of light for coreography, direction, performing art. Normally the use of light in theatre is functional, for variety, movement, coloring. Aesthetic and of effect. It is not common to think that light can be the origin of action, instead of an effect or that can be the structure and the buil up of the show, basically an element of direction. In this workshop it will be analyze how light is an element of direction, especially in theatre dance and in contemporary dance.
Those kind of shows are the most suitable for the use of light as part of direction; it’s a matter of fact that the use of a complex scenography in dance and theatre-dance is very rare so light becomes a part of the scenografy itself. Light cut the space in order to create a scene made of lights and shadow and that can get transformed during the show many times.
In contemporary dance and theatre-dance the use of light become an element of direction, that’s why it is important that the coreographer considers light design as part of the creation and inserts it in the drammaturgy of the show.

The workshop will start mentioning the history of theatre lighting, then will analyze the objectives of lighting and will end with practical lessons on principles of lighting

STEP 1 About the use of light in representative art

From the origin of greek and roman theatre, through medieval time reinassance, ‘700 and ‘800, till the discovery and the use of electricity. At least the use of light in contemporary art: we will focus movement and artists (Craig Appia, etc) of the early XX Century that begin to consider light as an element of direction.

STEP 2 Objectives of lighting
Premising that each show has its own rules and style, specific tasks are given to the light: lightning (visibility), the revealing of the shapes, the selective vision and creation of an atmosphere.
Beacause to consider light as an element of direction it is necessary to start from its elementary functions. In this phase we will see short videos to provide more elements for the theorical approach.

STEP 3 Principles of projecting and light design
Making a project of light design means choosing the different lights to use, choosing their positions and their pointing, as well as the colours (filters). All has got to be also translated on a stage plan. The last part of the workshop will provide a practical demonstration on stage.
